Battersea Removals Health and Safety Policy
Battersea Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our moving and relocation activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out the principles and responsibilities that guide the way we plan and deliver our removal services in homes, offices and commercial premises.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objective is to prevent injury and ill health arising from our work. We aim to achieve this by identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing effective control measures for all removal operations, including packing, loading, transport, unloading and storage.
We will continually seek to improve our health and safety performance by reviewing our procedures, training our staff, investing in suitable equipment and listening to feedback from our team and customers.
Legal Compliance and Responsibilities
Battersea Removals will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice. We recognise our duty to provide and maintain safe systems of work, safe plant and equipment, and adequate welfare facilities. We expect all employees and contractors to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work.
Management is responsible for ensuring that health and safety is integrated into planning and decision-making at all levels. Supervisors must make sure that work is carried out safely, that staff follow procedures, and that any concerns are reported promptly. All employees are required to cooperate fully with this policy and report hazards, near misses, incidents or unsafe practices immediately.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before carrying out removal work, we assess the risks associated with the specific property, access routes, parking, lifting requirements, traffic movement and any special customer needs. Based on this assessment, we implement appropriate control measures, such as using additional staff, specialist lifting equipment, vehicle positioning plans or protective coverings for floors and fixtures.
Our safe working practices cover manual handling, loading and securing items in vehicles, use of trolleys and lifting aids, working at height when required, and safe movement of items through homes, offices and communal areas. Staff are instructed never to take unnecessary risks or perform tasks they believe cannot be done safely.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a core part of our business, and we manage this risk carefully. We provide training in safe lifting techniques, team lifting, route planning and the correct use of handling aids. Heavy, bulky or awkward loads must be assessed before moving, and appropriate equipment such as sack trucks, dollies, straps or furniture blankets must be used.
All equipment and vehicles used in our removal services are maintained in a safe condition and inspected regularly. Defective tools, trolleys, ramps or vehicle fittings must not be used and must be reported so that repairs or replacements can be arranged without delay.
Safe Driving and Transport
Our drivers are responsible for the safe operation of vehicles at all times. This includes carrying out basic daily checks, ensuring loads are evenly distributed and properly secured, and complying with traffic regulations and parking restrictions. Routes are planned, where possible, to minimise congestion risks and to allow safe access to properties.
Drivers must not operate vehicles if they are unfit to drive for any reason. Mobile devices must not be used while driving, and any communication with the office or customers must be carried out in a safe and legal manner, such as when the vehicle is parked.
Protection of Customers, Premises and the Public
We take reasonable steps to protect customers, their belongings and premises, as well as neighbours and the general public. This includes careful positioning of vehicles, use of warning signs or cones where appropriate, and maintaining clear access routes. Staff are trained to be mindful of trip hazards, loose cables, open doors and other conditions that could pose a risk.
When working in shared buildings or commercial sites, our team will follow local safety rules, fire procedures and access arrangements. We will cooperate with site managers, concierge staff and security personnel to ensure that our operations do not compromise overall safety.
Training, Information and Supervision
All employees receive induction training that includes health and safety responsibilities, safe lifting techniques, incident reporting and emergency procedures. Additional training is provided for specific tasks such as driving, operating specialised equipment or working in higher-risk environments.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for monitoring working practices and providing guidance and instruction on site. Toolbox talks and briefings are used to reinforce key safety messages and to discuss any lessons learned from recent jobs or incidents.
Incident Reporting and Investigation
All accidents, injuries, near misses and unsafe conditions must be reported as soon as possible to a supervisor or manager. We investigate incidents to identify root causes and to implement corrective actions that reduce the likelihood of recurrence. Records of incidents and remedial actions are kept and reviewed as part of our continuous improvement process.
Health, Welfare and Fitness for Work
We recognise the physical nature of removal work and the importance of fitness for duty. Employees are encouraged to raise any health concerns that could affect their ability to work safely. We will make reasonable adjustments where possible to support staff with health issues, while ensuring the safety of the individual and others.
Adequate rest breaks, access to drinking water and appropriate welfare arrangements are provided during removal operations. Staff are reminded that alcohol or drug use that could impair judgement or performance is strictly prohibited during working hours and while representing the company.
Consultation and Policy Review
Battersea Removals values the input of its employees in improving health and safety. We encourage staff to share ideas for safer working methods, equipment improvements and better planning of moves. Where appropriate, we will consult with our workforce on significant changes to working practices or equipment that may affect safety.
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly, and at least annually, to ensure it remains relevant to our services and reflects any changes in legislation, industry standards or the nature of our operations. Updates will be communicated to all staff, and any necessary additional training will be provided.
By following this policy and working together, we aim to ensure that every move carried out by Battersea Removals is completed safely, efficiently and with respect for the wellbeing of everyone involved.
